Community Supports Downtown Dollars Campaign

Over 200 people gathered in anticipation as Historic Downtown Tappahannock Association (HDT) prepared to launch Downtown Dollars. The excitement was palpable as people lined Duke and Cross Streets for over an hour, eager to get in on the Double Dollars and support their favorite local establishments.

As the clock struck 10AM on Saturday, February 3, the HDT team wasted no time in getting things started and moving the process quickly at their Duke Street office. Historic Downtown Tappahannock Association issued a staggering $35,000 in universal Downtown gift cards. The outpouring of support was truly remarkable.

The demand for gift cards was so high that HDT sold out of their initial stock within a mere 30 minutes. A testament to the strong bond between small businesses and the community who relies on them. Witnessing this overwhelming response, the HDT Board and Staff quickly huddled together to meet the increasing demand.

“Our customers weren’t just purchasing a piece of plastic, they were directly contributing to the growth and sustainability of our local economy,” said Beth Sharpe, Executive Director of Historic Downtown Tappahannock Association. “When our initial stock of gift cards began to dwindle, we quickly reallocated some funding to this program to activate additional gift cards until we met our max allowance of $35,000 through the gift card processing system.”

Sharpe continued, “The positive response exceeded all expectations. It was heartwarming to see people rallying together to support the small businesses in the District that make Tappahannock unique. We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support shown during this gift card event. It serves as a reminder of the power we hold as consumers to make a difference.”

Small businesses foster a sense of place and identity. When you walk into a locally-owned store, you’re not just another customer; you’re a valued member of the community. The relationships formed between customers and small business owners are built on trust, personalized service, and a shared commitment to the local community.

By choosing to shop at small businesses, you are making a conscious decision to invest here at home. Every dollar spent at a local establishment has a multiplier effect, generating additional revenue for other local businesses. This creates a positive cycle of economic growth that benefits everyone. As we move forward, HTD is eager to continue to supporting local businesses, not just during special events, but throughout the year.

Downtown Dollars is a grassroots effort to support small business economic growth. The double dollar event was funded through grants. All gift card purchases directly impact only the participating businesses and Historic Downtown Tappahannock Association does not receive any proceeds from the program.
